Benicio del Toro and Will Smith sat down for Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series, and the Concussion actor got real about why he went into show business.

“When I was 15, my girlfriend cheated on me,” Smith admits. “And from that moment, in this bizarre psychological twist, I wanted to be the most famous entertainer on Earth.”

Smith believed that if he became famous, no girlfriend would ever cheat on him. It’s safe to say Smith has achieved household name recognition, but as a result of his teenage vendetta, the father of two says he now seeks that reactive element in his characters when selecting roles.

“I’m always looking for that in my characters,” Smith tells del Toro in the clip. “What’s the bizarre psychological leap they make based on some trauma?”
