The new trailer for Barbershop: The Next Cut reunites the crew from Calvin’s Barbershop for the first time in nearly 12 years, with a couple of new faces. Both Common and Nicki Minaj join the staff at the Southside establishment, which has since combined with its beauty salon spin-off.
As director Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man Holiday) told EW, the story — while still a comedy — deals with some realities of Chicago today. “The overarching story deals with some of the gang violence in Chicago, specifically Ice Cube’s son is being lured by the gangs because he’s a high-profile basketball player,” he said. “It really reminded me a lot of Boyz n the Hood. It’s ironic that Ice Cube is in the Furious Styles role that Lawrence Fishburne played back in the day.”
Barbershop: The Next Cut opens in theaters on April 15.
