Donald Trump took the reins on Saturday Night Live last week, a decision that might have felt like a punishment to some viewers — but the NBC show is rewarding its audience this week by letting the constantly delightful Elizabeth Banks take over.
This marks Banks’ first time hosting the show, though she’s no stranger to comedy: Her credits include roles in 30 Rock, Modern Family, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Wet Hot American Summer (both the film and the Netflix series), and just about every other comedy staple of the past decade or so. But despite her penchant for comedies, she’s actually on SNL this week promoting the relatively dramatic The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2, out this Friday.
Because of that, there will definitely be some sort of Hunger Games sketch — and if we’re lucky, maybe we’ll get something riffing off the Pitch Perfect films, the sequel of which Banks directed and appeared in. It’s about time Banks show off her a capella skills (or lack of them?), and now’s the perfect opportunity.
But even if a Pitch Perfect reference doesn’t make its way into the show, there will still be plenty of good music with Disclosure providing the evening’s soundtrack along with special guests Lorde and Sam Smith. Both artists are featured on Disclosure’s latest album, the recently released (and well-received) Caracal. Since the duo’s already announced their guests, it’s obvious which songs they’re likely going to perform: “Omen,” the single featuring Smith, and Lorde collaboration “Magnets.”
