Though it wasn’t released for a Nintendo platform, the iconic first 3D entry in the Final Fantasy series will soon join the roster of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series with a new character and stage coming to the fray.
During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, the first since the death of Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who normally led them, it was announced that Cloud Strife, the main character of Final Fantasy VII will be a playable character in both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. Additionally, a Midgar stage will be downloadable for the game.
Cloud is the latest non-Nintendo character to join the fight, with Street Fighter‘s Ryu having done so earlier this year. Cloud is of note, though, for not having been associated with Nintendo’s platforms (though the Final Fantasy series certainly has in its earlier iterations). He has appeared, outside of VII, as a character in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, which blends Disney and Square Enix characters together.
No release date or price has been announced, but more information about the character is expected in December. Watch his reveal below.
