On Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert celebrated the birthday of bandleader Jon Batiste and the recent ruling that moved “Happy Birthday To You” into the public domain, by giving everyone a little treat.
Colbert had Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer — and David Letterman’s favorite Christmastime performer — Darlene Love record a version of “Happy Birthday to You” that anyone can use. Quite literally: In addition to a generic “you” version of the song, Colbert had more than 1,200 others uploaded to YouTube, highlighting names like Erik, Mark, Veronica, Ariana, Ruby, and more. (Each video features the same Love performance with a different name dubbed in at the appropriate time.)
Interested parties and those celebrating birthdays today can find out if their name made the cut at www.lateshowbirthday.com. Watch Colbert introduce the new birthday initiative below.
