Working for America’s most popular sketch comedy show is likely stressful in any capacity. But for Colin Jost, the demand of his former head writer job got in the way of his creativity.

“The managerial part of the [head writer] job of dealing with the staff and managing a staff is very stressful,” Jost told NPR Tuesday. “It runs contrary to how you think as a performer.”

The Weekend Update co-host assures he’s doing just as much writing as he did during his time as head writer for the past three seasons, but by relieving his logistical duties going into season 41, Jost got to focus more on his craft. And he’s happy with the decision.

“I feel a lot more relief and a new joy about my job this year because I’m focusing on the creative elements again,” Jost said. “It kind of gives me a second wind at our show.”
