Trevor Noah: Daily Show host talks appendectomy, the American health care system

‘I’ve seen the billboards’

Just one night after missing an episode due to an emergency appendectomy, Daily Show host Trevor Noah returned to his desk on Thursday — but what he’d lost in internal organs, he’d gained in experience.

As the host explained, his bout with appendicitis also served as a crash course in the American health care system. Noah recalled feeling like he was “dying” in the emergency room’s waiting area, only to be asked to fill out paperwork and told where he could and could not faint.

“[The nurse] goes, ‘Uh, I don’t know, how are you paying for this?’ ” Noah said. “And I was like, ‘Well, with my life, clearly.’ “

After dispelling rumors that he’d been forced back to the desk before he was ready, the host revealed “hidden camera footage” in which his correspondents all fought over his job in the hospital. It’s lonely at the top.
