Talk about a bad case of the Mondays.
Penny (Samantha Sloyan) joins the ranks of Grey Sloan Memorial during Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy — but considering half the hospital knows she was partially responsible for Derek’s death, she won’t make a great first impression. Worse, she spends her first day on Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) service! What’s in store for the new doc? And will Penny and Callie (Sara Ramirez) reconcile after that disastrous dinner? EW turned to Sloyan to get the scoop:
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What is Penny’s mindset going into her first day at the hospital?
SAMANTHA SLOYAN: Penny is understandably nervous, given the circumstances. But first and foremost, Penny is a doctor, and I think right now more than ever, she is focused on being the best doctor she can be.
What can you tease about Penny’s actual first day?
She is in the same hospital as Dr. Meredith Grey. Penny better be at the top of her game.
What’s the dynamic like between Meredith and Penny?
Their interactions have been intense but also brief. Now that they are in the same building, I think we can really begin to see their dynamic take shape.
What’s the state of her relationship with Callie when she heads into her first day?
The last we saw Penny and Callie together, Penny was calling a cab. Things could be better. She cares for Callie, but knows how much it is asking to accept this new information. Especially considering how Callie found out.
How is Callie torn between Penny and Meredith?
The doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial are like family. I think that Callie and Penny have real feelings for each other, but their relationship is new. How do you choose between family and something that has true potential but is still basically unknown to you?
Does Penny find any allies at the hospital?
After the dinner party, we heard April talk about how a mistake for a doctor can mean someone’s life. All the doctors live with that fact. I think Penny will find some allies at Grey Sloan.
Is there anything you can tease about Penny’s next interaction with Amelia?
Amelia is such a deep, intense character. I think whatever their interaction, Penny will feel it.
We know Penny was one of the doctors who treated Derek, but will we get more into her history besides that?
Dr. Derek Shepard was a husband, brother and friend to these people. Penny has to find a way to work side by side with them and gain their trust. I think right now, That Night IS Penny’s history.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
