It was bluesy, it was twangy, it was an unapologetic display of abnormal levels of talent. Just after Chris Stapleton became the CMAs’ Best New Artist Wednesday night, he took the stage with Nashville newcomer Justin Timberlake for a stomping trip through Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” off his excellent debut Traveller, and Timberlake’s “Drink You Away,” from his album, The 20/20 Experience.

The performance was announced Tuesday and swiftly exceeded expectations. It started off with Stapleton’s big barreled baritone and by the time Timberlake took over in the second verse, the room had gone wild. Stapleton’s wife Morgane added the whispy harmonies Stapleton’s set has come to benefit from regularly. By the end, we were all taking cues from Keith Urban, who was shown videotaping the whole thing on his iPhone.
