If you thought Adele’s heartbreaking ballad “Hello” was sad, wait until a sad clown sings it to you.
That’s the costume Joe Jonas chose when he covered the track with his band DNCE. Jonas initially released the cover on Saturday, and he seems to be taking the Halloween theme even further in the brand-new performance video, wearing a full clown costume complete with a rainbow wig and a rather unsettling frown.
“Hello,” Adele’s first single off her upcoming third studio album, 25, has been unstoppable since its Oct. 23 premiere, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. In addition to becoming the British singer’s fourth No. 1 single, it also became the first track to sell at least 1 million downloads in a week. It’s only making the wait for 25 —due Nov. 20 — seem that much longer, as well as the singer’s recent revelation that it will feature a range of collaborations including Bruno Mars, Danger Mouse, Ryan Tedder, Max Martin, and previous collaborator Paul Epworth.
As for DNCE, their costume choice shouldn’t come as a huge surprise: The band recently described their debut ;EP, Swaay—which was released on Oct. 23—as unapologetically funky.
“When I walk around, I want people to look at me and not have any self-conscious thought they might have or shyness or reservation about how other people are seeing them. I like bringing that lightness to that world, whether you laugh at me or appreciate it or you’re just like, ‘That guy’s weird,'” bassist Cole Whittle told Rolling Stone. “I like that it takes people out of their comfort zone enough to broaden what is normal to them.”
