Steve Austin is officially headed for the big screen.

TWC-Dimension has announced that The Six Billion Dollar Man, starring Mark Wahlberg as the world’s first bionic man, will be released on Dec. 22, 2017. Based on Martin Caidin’s 1972 novel Cyborg and the classic ‘70s TV series it inspired, the new movie will follow Wahlberg as Austin, a military officer who is brought back from near-death and given extraordinary abilities with the help of cutting-edge technology.

Damián Szifron, who is best known for his Oscar-nominated 2014 film Wild Tales, wrote the screenplay and is now set to direct. Pete Berg was previously attached as director. Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson, and Bob Weinstein will produce the film.

“I’m thrilled to assemble The Six Billion Dollar Man for the big screen with the likes of Bob Weinstein and Damián Szifron,” Wahlberg said in a release. “We look forward to creating a Steve Austin for the 21st century.”

The original Six Million Dollar Man TV series ran from 1974 to 1978 and starred Lee Majors as Austin, and it also sparked the ‘70s spinoff series The Bionic Woman, starring Lindsay Wagner, and the short-lived 2007 reboot.

“Writing the screenplay was such a fantastic ride and embarking on this journey with Mark, Bob, and Stephen to take this story to a whole new level is simply spectacular,” Szifron said. “Growing up, these kind of films left an indelible mark on me and now it feels so good to be making one.”

Principal photography for The Six Billion Dollar Man will begin in September 2016.
