Joshua Jackson and Mahershala Ali are heading to the stage for their next gigs: The two — who currently star in The Affair and House of Cards, respectively — will star alongside Anne Son and Tessa Thompson in Off Broadway’s upcoming Smart People, a play by Lydia R. Diamond about how race plays into the story of our lives.
According to a press release, the play follows four Harvard grads “entangled in a complex web of social and sexual politics” on the eve of the 2008 presidential election — the one that Barack Obama would go on to win.
Although this will mark Jackson’s Off Broadway debut, the actor’s previously performed with Patrick Stewart in David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre. Like Jackson, Ali is most known for his on-screen work, but he’s also appeared in a number of stage shows including A Doll’s House and The Great White Hope.
Thompson previously appeared in the Oscar-nominated Selma and a number of television shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Veronica Mars. Son’s acting credits include roles in Off Broadway’s Joker’s Wild and The Crucible and on TV’s NCIS: LA and ER.
Performances of Smart People begin Jan. 26 at the Second Stage Theatre, and the play officially opens Feb. 11.
