In December 2014, YouTube star Connor Franta posted a video to his popular account titled “Coming Out.”
“2014 is truly the year that I have accepted who I am, and become happy with that person,” Franta said at the start of the video. “So today, I want to talk to you guys about that and be open and honest and tell you that I’m gay.” Since its posting, Franta’s video has been watched more than 9.5 million times.
“It’s been 10 months, but it feels like it has been both longer and just yesterday,” Franta said of the emotional video at Stream Con on Saturday. Asked how his life has changed since coming out, the 23-year-old explained that it has allowed him to stop worrying.
“I’m just very comfortable being me. I don’t worry about pronouns or anything like that. In public, I do whatever I want, I say whatever I want. It’s great,” he said. “I’m just comfortable in my own skin.
Franta has been outspoken in his support of LGBT youth, and recently offered the community some advice during the 11th annual GLSEN Respect Awards. “Just hang in there,” he said. “It’s going to get better, it really will. Don’t be afraid. Make sure you’re in a safe space to be who you are. You’ll get through it.”
