Just as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has found a new name to potentially join the “bunch of jackasses standing in a circle,” reports claim that one very big name won’t be joining James Gunn’s Marvel follow-up.
Variety reports that Matthew McConaughey passed on the film’s villain role, leaving the unknown character still to be filled. The first film’s villain was Ronan, played by Lee Pace (with Josh Brolin’s Thanos pulling some strings behind the scenes). Unsurprisingly, given his state at the end of the film, Ronan will not be returning for the sequel, as Gunn has previously stated.
The sequel has already added Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) for a mysterious role in the much-anticipated 2017 film, which will see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel return.
A representative for Matthew McConaughey did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
