Ed Sheeran is a good fellow to have as a friend. A few months ago we learned (twice) that he’s the go-to guy when you’re looking to make a splashy marriage proposal, and it turns out he can help pay the bills too — as long as you’ve got some songwriting chops to contribute.

During a recent interview with The Daily Mirror, the British singer talked about writing the hit song “Thinking Out Loud” with a longtime friend and collaborator, Amy Wadge, who was “going through financial troubles” while he was putting the finishing touches on his second album.

“She drove to my house,” Sheeran said, “and she asked if I could put a song from when I was 17 on the deluxe album, so she could get a little bit of money and pay the mortgage and bills and stuff.”

He continued, “While she was there, we wrote ‘Thinking Out Loud.’ Now she never has to worry about money again.”

Sheeran and Wadge have known each other since he was a teenager, and they co-wrote an early EP of his, appropriately titled Songs I Wrote With Amy.

“She’s got a family and two kids and stuff and every time I speak to her, she’s going on holiday,” Sheeran added. “It’s really nice to see.”
