Gwen Stefani’s “Used to Love You” made its television debut on Monday thanks to Ellen DeGeneres, Stefani’s friend who said she first heard the song in the singer’s bathroom.
The heartbreaking track, about the pain that comes at the end of a relationship, will be part of Stefani’s new album. “I needed to go through what I needed to go through to write the record that I needed to write,” Stefani said to EW in a recent interview about the new record. She and Gavin Rossdale announced their divorce in August following 13 years of marriage. “There was a lot of prayer and meditating in the sense of trying to be open and grateful with this record. These songs are really natural — they’re from not worrying about what happened or what’s going to happen but about living in the moment, from trying to be present and trying to feel.”
