Dallas Green, the Canadian singer-songwriter who records music as City and Colour, just dropped his fifth studio LP, If I Should Go Before You. On the album, he wandered into new sonic terrain, lining his tracks with R&B-tinged grooves and hints of psychedelia. A prime example of this genre-blending and bending is the bluesy “Wasted Love,” and EW has an exclusive premiere of the track’s music video, below.
For the visuals, Green tapped Director X (Kanye West, Drake, Justin Bieber, Jay-Z). “I’ve always admired X’s videos; for my whole life it seems,” Green tells EW. “I never really thought he’d ever want to do something for me, or with me, so it’s super cool to have him interested — but also to watch him work, and to see how he puts himself into the process.”
Director X echoes the enthusiasm by email, writing, “City and Colour is the real deal. Real musicians, real music, and real fans. I wanted to create a video that people would watch and feel. ‘I want to be there’: That’s what I feel when I watch it.”
It’s not more than a few seconds into the video — set in a basement jam session and featuring Green’s bandmates Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, Dead Weather), Dante Schwebel (Spanish Gold, Dan Auerbach), Doug MacGregor (Constantines) and Matt Kelly — that viewers will see what X means. We all want to be there.
While it might be hard to come by an invite to their next bash, party on vicariously through the video below.
