Down the yellow brick road they go: NBC has unveiled the first look at the Cowardly Lion (David Alan Grier), Dorothy (Shanice Williams), the Tin Man (Ne-Yo), and the Scarecrow (Elijah Kelley) in their upcoming production of The Wiz Live!.
People got an exclusive sneak peek at the costuming for the special, which costume designer Paul Tazewell calls the “edgiest of high-fashion.”
“We’re creating a fantasy land that also is inspired by some of the imagery you’d see today,” Tazewell told People during a recent interview. “It’s the edgiest of high-fashion from now but in the world of the Emerald City.”
The Wiz Live! – which will air to the network this December – follows Dorothy as she’s swept away from her home in Kansas to the mysterious land of Oz. Common, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Uzo Aduba, Amber Riley, and Stephanie Mills will take the stage as well, along with acrobats from Cirque Du Soleil that will be utilized in several scenes.
Directed by Kenny Leon, The Wiz Live! debuts Thursday, Dec. 3 on NBC. For more on the upgraded looks of the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and, of course, Dorothy, head on over to People.
