Luther creator: Escape from New York remake writer

The dream of the Escape from New York remake lives on. Thirty-four years after Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken invaded punk prison metropolis Manhattan in John Carpenter’s classic dystopian actioner, EW has confirmed that Luther creator Neil Cross has been hired to write a new Escape from New York.

As originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cross will write a new screenplay for a project that has been bouncing around for a few years now. (At one point, the new Escape was being explicitly pitched as a trilogy-kickstarting prequel adventure.) THR claims that 20th Century Fox is envisioning the Escape remakes along the same lines as the successfully rebooted Planet of the Apes series, which unfortunately probably doesn’t mean half the roles will be played by Andy Serkis. Cross is best known as the creator of Luther — a.k.a. The Idris Elba Show Netflix Told Me About — but he’s no stranger to the fantastical, having written two recent episodes of Doctor Who.

Since Cross is best known for the gritty pulp of Luther, one can imagine that that new Escape will be a serious-minded film. As a counterargument, here’s Kurt Russell playing basketball.
