Supergirl, CBS’ upcoming series about Krypton’s most famous daughter, soared into the Empire Room at New York Comic Con Sunday afternoon, screening the pilot for fans before executive producer Ali Adler, star Mehcad Brooks (who plays Jimmy Olsen), and guest star Peter Facinelli (who joins the show in episode 2 as the villainous Maxwell Lord), arrived on stage.
During the panel, Adler confirmed a new addition to the slate of villains Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) will have to face this season: Toyman, a dangerous, flamboyant character from the comic books who often used toys and childlike gadgets to spread evil. The character was an enemy to both Supergirl and her cousin, Superman.
Speaking of the Man of Steel, Adler also discussed why the show went out of its way not to say the name “Superman,” aside from the rights issue. “We do sort of say it,” Adler explained, pointing out that they call him “the big guy,” among other monikers. “But we all live in someone’s shadow in our lives, and we’re all second best to someone in our lives. What’s amazing on this show is she gets to be at the forefront, so we’re going to address where he is very quickly in the series. But it’s her show.”
Aside from finding out what’s really going on with Superman, the panelists teased romance on the show as well, though Brooks was quick to point out that given Jimmy Olsen’s connection to Kara’s relative, it might not be the best idea. “There’s a bro code,” the actor joked, before adding, “There’s an attraction between the two, so I would just say to keep watching.”
