In the moment Backstreet Boys fans had been waiting for ever since Nick Carter announced he’d joined the cast of Dancing With the Stars, the boy bander performed a classic BSB song alongside partner Sharna Burgess on Monday’s episode.
The jazz routine had some help from Carter’s bandmate, AJ McLean, who dropped by the rehearsal studio to ensure that a crucial BSB move made it into the final choreography. It worked: Carter and Burgess’ dance to “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” earned the pair a respectable 27 out of 30 from the judges’ panel.

And McLean wasn’t the only Backstreet Boy to make an appearance on the episode, entitled “My Most Memorable Year.” Carter’s most memorable year was 1992, when he joined the Backstreet Boys at just 12 years old. In short interview segments, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, and Kevin Richardson each praised Carter’s talents as a vocalist and performer, and said that being in the band saved Carter from the more dangerous paths his childhood friends had followed. Carter got emotional when he confessed that he grew up in a “dysfunctional family,” but, luckily, his bandmates “loved and treated [him] like a true brother.”
