The mass murder of nine people on a community college campus in Roseburg, Oregon last week was the 45th school shooting in 2015. And to illustrate how often stories of gun violence cycle through news broadcasts, Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams revealed to new host Trevor Noah that she “pre-tapes” discussion of “these terrible, unending stories.”
“I’m sick of having to do my job, when our leaders won’t do theirs,” Williams said after her clip package around the Oregon shooting included a reference to Jon Stewart, who left The Daily Show in August. As Williams showed Noah, she also has banked footage about police brutality, attacks in Syria, and political sex scandals.
But it was the general response to mass shootings that the Daily Show correspondent was most interested in investigating, via what she called “our five stages of mass-shooting grief.”
“Stage 1 is the shooting; Stage 2 is national mourning; 3, president cries at podium; 4, a weekend of half-assed gun control debate in the media; and then finally we all go back to keeping up with the Kardashians,” Williams said.
