Fox: Dancing with the Stars clone will focus on regular people

Call it Dancing With the Average Folks.

Fox announced on Monday that it is working with the producers of American Idol to develop a yet-to-be titled dancing show featuring competitors who are regular Joes and Janes, not celebrities.

This new dance competition, Fox says, will “highlight the lives of real-life couples who, each week, will participate in intensive training, rehearsals and live performances, until one couple is crowned the winner.” It’s supposed to use couples in various stages of their lives — from freshly dating to old marrieds.

It’s unclear who will actually pick the winner. Maybe Simon Cowell?

The decision comes as ABC is experiencing some of its lowest ratings ever for Dancing With the Stars, now in its 21st season. After two weeks, the show is averaging a 1.9 rating in adults 18-49 and around 11 million viewers per episode. Still, the dance competition continues to attract lots of attention — especially when newsmakers like Paula Deen decide to slip on the Danskins.
