Just as the Garveys will make a fresh start in the upcoming second season of The Leftovers, the series’ opening credits are starting over as well.
The new credit sequence features country/folk singer Iris DeMent’s “Let the Mystery Be,” the apt lyrics of which question where we come from and where we go. It cuts through a series of photographs, mostly of people having fun outdoors, but there’s a dark catch: Some individuals in the photos are replaced with human-shaped outlines of sky.
These new credits mark a significant departure (no pun intended) from the first season’s much darker, more oppressive opener, which saw the painted figures of a Renaissance-inspired ceiling mural being slowly pulled to the sky against urgent, aching strings. Tonally, it’s a complete 180 — perhaps hinting at a lighter, brighter Leftovers?
We’ll have to wait and see. The Leftovers season 2 premieres Sunday, Oct. 4 on HBO.
