Ed Sheeran‘s previously written songs for One Direction, including Up All Night‘s “Moments” and FOUR‘s “18” — but those days are over, the musician told MTV.

“They’ve gotten to a point where they know how to write songs,” Sheeran said. “Harry was 16 when I first met him … but now he’s 21 and has written with everyone in the world and learned how to write songs, so they don’t really need as much help anymore. They can kind of do their own thing.”

In short? Don’t expect any Sheeran-penned tunes on One Direction’s upcoming Made in the A.M. — but do expect a more “evolved version” of the band. “We’re stretching out outside of the perimeters of what a traditional pop boy band would do,” One Direction producer Julian Bunetta recently told EW. “We’re just kind of having fun. No rules.”

Made in the A.M. arrives Nov. 13.
