The premiere of CBS’ new medical drama Code Black won its timeslot in viewers on Wednesday, but the power of Empire continued to help Fox top the night in total eyeballs and adults 18-49.
Early results from Nielsen show that Empire, while down 19 percent from last week’s premiere episode, easily beat the competition with a 5.4 rating and 13.6 million viewers. What’s more, Fox projects that 18-49 rating to increase to a 7.6 in seven days.
Code Black earned a 1.6 rating and 8.5 million viewers — a drop from its lead-in Criminal Minds (2 rating, 9.8 million). Overall, CBS came in second for the night in viewers (9.2 million) behind Fox (9.9 million). Survivor (2.3 rating, 9.3 million) was down 8 percent from last week’s premiere.
Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.27 million viewers.
ABC came in third, behind Fox and CBS in adults 18-49, with only The Middle (2.2 rating, 7.8 million) showing improvement over its premiere last week. Nashville, which averaged 4.7 million viewers, was even with a 1.2 rating.
NBC trailed in fourth in viewers and the demo by premiering a second season of Chicago PD, which earned a 1.7 and 6.6 million viewers. The Mysteries of Laura (1.2) was the net’s most-watched drama of the night with 7.1 million.
