Russell Crowe has signed on to star in IM Global’s upcoming drama In Sand And Blood, EW has confirmed.
Based on the true story of American ship captain James Riley and the crew of his merchant ship Commerce, In Sand and Blood follows Riley and his men who, after surviving a shipwreck off the Saharan coast in 1815, were captured by slave traders. Riley’s 1817 memoir detailed his capture and how he led his men on a thousand-mile journey through the desert to freedom, and Abraham Lincoln cited Riley’s memoir, best known with the title Sufferings In Africa, as one of the most influential books he ever read.
Saul Dibb (The Duchess) will direct, with Luc Roeg producing. IM Global founder and CEO Stuart Ford and president of production Matt Jackson will serve as executive producers.
Crowe hinted at his involvement in the film with a tweet posted last week.
