With the premiere of American Horror Story: Hotel just one week away, a new sneak peek into the Cortez teases a pivotal scene between Max Greenfield’s Hollywood junkie Gabriel, and Wes Bentley’s detective John Lowell.
The teaser, which aired during Tuesday’s Scream Queens, features John lying down on his hotel bed in room 64, placidly staring at the ceiling. All normal stuff, until the camera pans down and we see Gabriel unconscious — maybe sleeping, maybe something more sinister — before he wakes up, gasping and struggling for breath in apparent agony and/or shock.

The scene will take place in the first two episodes, and as EW previously revealed, room 64 was used as an office by mass murderer James March (Evan Peters), who built the Hotel Cortez. “In modern day, that room is not a place guests should ever venture … although many unfortunately do,” wrote EW’s Tim Stack of an earlier AHS teaser. “The sound of slurping through a straw is probably not someone imbibing a slurpee but more likely one of the hotel’s resident bloodsuckers.”
My guess? Someone just woke up to discover they’re no longer among the living, but the undead.
American Horror Story: Hotel premieres Oct. 7 on FX.
