Today in Super Meta Book News, Reese Witherspoon was photographed carrying a copy of Mindy Kaling’s recently-released (and absolutely hilarious) book, Why Not Me? (For the record, she’s also carrying another sophomore effort: Jenny Lawson’s Furiously Happy.)
Normally, this wouldn’t be major news — we’d just be thrilled that a celebrity we already know is a big reader is still reading. But in this case, Witherspoon is holding (and presumably, reading) a book she actually appears in! Even crazier? In Why Not Me? Kaling writes that Witherspoon taught her to smile for photographers while the two were walking to their cars after lunch because, as she told Kaling, “No one who sees a photograph of us wants to see that we are anything other than totally happy all the time.”
“At first I thought that couldn’t possibly be true,” Kaling writes, “but then, on the drive home, I realized how correct Reese was. When I see a photo in Us Weekly of Angelina Jolie-Pitt walking back to her car from the pharmacy, I feel a little irrationally miffed if she’s not smiling. She has a great life and, like, twenty gorgeous kids! … If you’re not grinning ear-to-ear when you’re sleeping with Brad Pitt every night, then how sh—y is my life?”
And there you have it, the endless cycle of literature and life encapsulated in one paparazzi photo: Life inspires books, books record life, life imitates books. Also, Reese Witherspoon practices what she preaches.
