To celebrate the 11th anniversary of the release of their Grammy-winning American Idiot, Green Day have shared the first trailer for Heart Like a Hand Grenade, a documentary about the making of their game-changing seventh studio album.
Director John Roecker calls it a “fly-on-the-wall art house piece,” incorporating footage from the studio as well as exclusive footage from a private show in which they played the album in full shortly after finishing the recording. The new trailer, which debuted via Rolling Stone, gives a sneak peek at that show.
In a statement on Green Day’s website, Roecker explained his minimal approach in creating the documentary, which he shot over nine months with the band.
“This film does not contain high drama or fighting. It shows a band on top of their game creating incredible music. It is a film that inspires. It is also a very small film. All it took was a box of tapes and one camera,” he wrote. “It was also a risk for the band because this album was either going to take them to a higher level or sink them. Either way I was going to document it.”
After its Oct. 8 premiere at Mill Valley Film Festival, Heart Like a Hand Grenade opens in theaters Oct. 15.
