Woody Harrelson has joined the cast of War for the Planet of the Apes, a string of prepositional phrases that is also the title of the third movie in the rebooted franchise, EW has learned. He is expected to play the film’s villain.
The third film following Caesar, the hyper-intelligent ape played by Andy Serkis, isn’t expected to hit theaters until 2017, but there are a few things we already know about it. Following up his success with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, director Matt Reeves is returning to helm the threequel, as is screenwriter Mark Bomback.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s original story on the Harrelson casting mentions that he’ll play an antagonistic character known as the Colonel, a title that fits both with the name of the film and where Dawn left off. If you can’t remember all the way back to 2014, the movie closes on an ambiguous note with Caesar and his apes preparing to face the human’s military might. It’s easy to see where a colonel might fit into that puzzle.
Harrelson will next appear in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which hits theaters on Nov. 20.
