Oscilloscope Laboratories nabbed the U.S. rights to Julio Medem’s ma ma, a drama starring and produced by Penélope Cruz.

The film, which premieres at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 15, follows a pregnant mother (Cruz) who forms a bond with a soccer scout (Luis Tosar) soon after she gets diagnosed with cancer — and soon after his wife gets injured in a car crash.

ma ma is a deeply resonant film that is clearly the work of an auteur with a distinct and important voice,” O-Scope’s Dan Berger said of Medem, whose past films include 2007’s Caótica Ana and 2001’s Sex and Lucia, in a statement. “Julio’s vision, and Penélope’s incredible performance leap from the screen and we couldn’t be more excited to bring them to audiences.”
