The love shared by Laurel Hester, an unassuming New Jersey police detective, and Stacie Andree, a soft-spoken auto mechanic, would ultimately become an engine of change in the fight for gay rights.
As chronicled in the fact-based drama Freeheld, starring Julianne Moore as Hester and Ellen Page as Andree, the couple challenged a discriminatory partner-benefits law when Hester became terminally ill and wanted to pass on her pension to Andree. Their eventual success marked a turning point in the quest for marriage equality.
But their story began rather ordinarily, with a meeting between two women trying to find their match. That first fateful spark is portrayed in a newly released clip, which you can see below.
