Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara find love in 1950s New York in the new Carol trailer

Posted on

In the new trailer for Carol, Cate Blanchett stars as the titular woman trapped in a loveless marriage. When she meets a young shop clerk named Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) in a Manhattan department store, the two feel an immediate connection, and despite their widely differing backgrounds and Carol’s complicated marriage, the two form a passionate relationship. Directed by Todd Haynes, Carol adapts Patricia Highsmith’s iconic 1952 novel, The Price of Salt.

“I first read it years ago, when I was filming my small part in a different Highsmith film, The Talented Mr. Ripley,” Blanchett told EW. “It was revelatory. You can’t forget [Highsmith] is the goddess of crime fiction, but in this instance, it’s the desire which is criminal.”

Carol will open in select cities on Nov. 20.
