Inspired by Uzodinma Iweala’s novel, Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming Beasts of No Nation brings to life the story of an African child solider named Agu (Abraham Attah) forced to take up arms in a civil war.
In Netflix’s newest trailer, the domineering Commandant (Idris Elba) teaches Agu the ways of war as he prepares the young fighters – his “family” – for the brutal battles ahead.
“All of you that have seen your family killed: you now have something that stands for you,” Elba says. “It has put the weapons of this war back in the hands of you, the young. You’re powerful.”
Beasts of No Nation made its debut at the Venice Film Festival and will make stops at Telluride Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, and London Film Festival. The film officially premieres Oct. 16 in Landmark theaters in the U.S. and worldwide on Netflix. See EW’s exclusive images from the movie, available here.
