U.K.’s X Factor contestant Josh Daniel’s emotional audition caused judge Simon Cowell to tear up as the singer performed a rendition of Labrinth’s “Jealous.”
The 21-year-old car mechanic lost his best friend two years prior — an experience that offered him new meaning in the song. “I’m jealous that he’s now happy in heaven, that he’s moved onto a better place and that I can’t still be with him,” Daniel said.
“That was the most captivated I’ve been in all the auditions so far,” judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini said following the performance. “You really touched me. I believed every word you sang.”
While fellow judge Nick Grimshaw echoed her sentiments, Cowell immediately moved for a vote, and Daniel received three yeses.
USA Today reported the auditions were taped shortly after the loss of Cowell’s mother, Julie Brett, on July 5, which could explain the more emotional response to the performance. See the full clip below.
