Meryl Streep has has played plenty of real people on screen: nuclear whistleblower Karen Silkwood, culinary icon Julia Child, and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, to name a few. Now the 19-time Oscar nominee is getting the biopic treatment herself — or at least a comedic version of it — courtesy of Christina Applegate and Funny or Die.
Applegate, the Married … With Children and Vacation star, does her best bad Streep impression in the trailer for Meryl: The Lifetime Biopic, a fictional TV movie purported to be from the same network that that gave us The Anna Nicole Story and Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.
In appropriately melodramatic fashion, Applegate puts her twist on signature scenes from the Streep canon: singing woefully off-key in Mamma Mia, threatening to beat up a priest in Doubt, calling for bourbon while massaging a chicken in Julie & Julia. The faux-biopic also promises to reveal the shocking secret behind Streep’s ability to cry on cue.
