Miley Cyrus: Taylor Swift squad appearance unlikely

Miley Cyrus hasn’t been shy about criticizing Taylor Swift in the media over the last month — she previously took issue with Swift’s video for “Bad Blood” in an interview with Marie Clare — so it should come as little surprise that Cyrus will not likely join Swift’s squad anytime soon.

Speaking to the New York Times, Cyrus said that while Swift might hang out with “musicians, actresses, models, entrepreneurs,” she would rather keep the company of “real people.”

“I’m not trying to be in the squad,” Cyrus said. “None of my friends are famous and not because of any other reason than I just like real people who are living real lives, because I’m inspired by them.”

Cyrus’ Times interview was an unfiltered affair, as an earlier portion also included the 22-year-old singer’s comments on Nicki Minaj and her response to being snubbed by the MTV Video Music Awards.

“People forget that the choices that they make and how they treat people in life affect you in a really big way,” Cyrus told the Times. “If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement. But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it.” Minaj was critical of the VMAs after she failed to receive a Video of the Year nomination for “Anaconda.”

“When the ‘other’ girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination,” Minaj wrote on Twitter. “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year. […] Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.” (Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” won Video of the Year in 2014.)

On Sunday, Minaj hit back at Cyrus during the rapper’s acceptance speech for Best Hip-Hop Video. “And now, back to this bitch that had a lot to say about me in the press. Miley what’s good?” Minaj said during the VMAs broadcast. A source close to MTV told EW that the incident was not staged.
