Posted on

Ridley Scott’s new film The Martian (out Oct. 2) will screen at this year’s Fantastic Fest, it was announced today. Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, this latest-science fiction extravaganza from the director of Alien, Blade Runner, and Prometheus stars Matt Damon as an astronaut who is stranded on the Red Planet. This year’s Fantastic Fest takes place Sept. 24-Oct. 1 at the South Lamar location of the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain in Austin, Tex.

Other new additions to the Fantastic Fest lineup include Ben Wheatley’s J.G. Ballard adaptation High-Rise, director Jeremy Saulnier’s Patrick Stewart-starring Green Room, Joe Begos’ new horror tale The Mind’s Eye, the world premiere of the sci-fi comedy Lazer Team, and a digital restoration of the 1972 Japanese anime film Belladonna of Sadness.

This year’s opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the Cannes-screened near-future love story The Lobster, which stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz.

It was previously announced that this year’s closing night film will be the Kurt Russell-starring western, Bone Tomahawk. Check out the official Fantastic Fest website for more details about this year’s event.
