At one point in last year’s first season of sitcom You’re the Worst, the father of sports-hating, L.A.-dwelling British novelist Jimmy (Chris Geere) sent him a soccer jersey. The gift was so ill-considered that even the suggestion from Jimmy’s girlfriend Gretchen (Aya Cash) that they “do it backwards while you watch foot-fetish anime” couldn’t cheer him up.
Who could play such a monster? The answer, EW can exclusively reveal, is David Schaal from the original, U.K. version of The Inbetweeners, who will appear as Jimmy’s dad Ronny in an episode called “A Right Proper Story.” The character is described as “a withholding soccer hooligan who never misses an opportunity to make fun of his only son. He has little respect for Jimmy’s chosen career and would rather Jimmy used his hands for a living, ‘like a real man.’”
In fact, Schaal’s character is just one of several family members we meet from Jimmy’s apparently awful clan. “They are horrible, horrible people and they’re very mean to Jimmy,” says You’re the Worst creator, Stephen Falk.”And it’s very funny.”
You’re the Worst premieres Sept. 9 at 10:30 p.m. ET on FXX.
