Watching your life’s story and the story of your closest friends unfold on screen would be a jarring experience for anyone. For Ice Cube, he had to do just that, with the added layer of his own son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., playing Ice Cube in Straight Outta Compton.
Ice Cube and Jackson Jr. talked about that process, interviewing each other about the film and the real-life story behind it for Noisey. Among the many questions Ice Cube had for his son about making the film, Jackson Jr. asked his father if any aspect of watching the movie proved particularly difficult.
“I hate to see the scene where Eazy [E] hears the news that he contracted HIV,” Ice Cube told his son. “It’s just hard, it’s rough, it’s sad, it’s the beginning of the end. That scene is still rough to check out and look at.”
Watch the interview above to hear the two talk more about the process of making the film, whether it was surreal for Ice Cube to see himself portrayed by his son (which director F. Gary Gray also spoke to EW about) and more about the film. For more on Straight Outta Compton, be sure to read EW’s review.
