Sad news out of Hollywood on Wednesday, as it was revealed Uggie the dog had died. The award-winning Jack Russell terrier became a celebrity in 2011 thanks to The Artist, but had a lengthy list of credits to his name, including 2011’s Water for Elephants. That film starred Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, and Witherspoon used her popular Instagram account to pay tribute to the deceased dog.

“RIP to my canine friend Uggie,” Witherspoon wrote. “I worked with him on Water for Elephants. What a special, sweet soul.” She also included a dog emoji with the post.

“Uggie had a cancerous tumor in the prostate and is now in a better place not feeling pain,” Uggie’s owner and trainer, Omar von Muller, said in a statement on Facebook. “Thank you for your support, I will not be reading any comments for a while as it is too painful at the moment.”
