Kristen Stewart talks smiling during Jimmy Fallon interview

Kristen Stewart has made headlines that spotlight her apparent disdain for smiling in photographs. (Just recently, the actress’ photo was used as part of a New York Times piece on “resting bitch face.”) But speaking with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday’s The Tonight Show, Stewart assured the viewing public that she does, in fact, smile — just not on command.

“I can do it,” she said, before adding, “whether or not I smile at you,”

Stewart said she was surprised that the notion of her not smiling has been so perpetuated by the tabloids. “I went out and wanted to be able to take a walk around New York without being followed around by paparazzi,” she said. In order to combat the paparazzi, she purposely smiled wide and had several photos taken of her beaming. But after realizing how much money was being made from those photos, Stewart decided against smiling the next day. “Back off,” she joked, cracking her knuckles.

Stewart has often spoke out against sexism in Hollywood and the media, most recently in an interview with Harpers Bazaar UK. “Women inevitably have to work a little bit harder to be heard. Hollywood is disgustingly sexist. It’s crazy. It’s so offensive it’s crazy,” she said.
