More Meryl, less Springfield in the new Ricki and the Flash trailer

Three-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep is the frontwoman in the latest trailer for Jonathan Demme’s Ricki and the Flash, perhaps disappointing fans of rocker Rick Springfield, who only appears briefly at the beginning of the spot. The renewed emphasis for the Aug. 7 release is on the tragicomic family dynamic, peppered with acerbic dialogue by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody. “Some day you’re going to find a gray hair,” Streep’s Ricki tells her suicidal daughter (played by the actress’ own, Mamie Gummer), “and I don’t mean on your head.”

The movie’s recently announced soundtrack includes intriguing choices like U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” performed by Streep and Springfield’s fictional band. An original song written by Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice called “Cold One” — which you can already imagine being performed on next year’s Oscar show — can also be heard in a new clip from the film.
