Following the premiere of the eight-part docuseries — of which you can read a recap here —Vanity Fair released a behind-the-scenes featurette from the groundbreaking shoot, with Jenner speaking candidly about what it means to come out as transgender.
In the video, Jenner credits the Internet for the increased understanding of trans issues, “where you can actually see other people who are going through the same struggle you’re going through,” as well as trailblazers like Laverne Cox and Janet Mock. Similarly, Jenner hopes that being so public about her own experience will “make it easier for somebody else down the line.”
While being shot for Vanity Fair, Jenner found herself being more comfortable in her own skin than she had ever been. “That is a wonderful feeling to have,” she says. “To be able to wake up in the morning, be yourself, get dressed, get ready to go out, and just be a normal person. I’ve never been able to do that. It’s always been confusion.”
“I never thought that someday I’d be able to do this,” she continues, adding that seeing the image of herself in a full-length mirror from behind was “powerful.”
The video concludes on a hopeful, forward-thinking note, with Jenner declaring that she is “so excited about the future.”
