We gave it an A-

The suspenseful first installment in Sigler’s Generations trilogy lives up to its hype, packing plenty of thrills into its 300-plus pages. The novel follows the adventures of M. Savage—known as Em—a spunky kid who awakens to discover that she’s been sealed in a coffin, with no idea how she got there. Clawing her way out, she finds herself in a room lined with caskets, most of them filled with dead kids. But there are a few other survivors, and before long Em is leading them on a desperate search for answers in an alien world. Em’s brash mix of adolescent emotions and inner courage makes for a compelling protagonist, and Sigler lets readers make their most important discoveries through her eyes. It’s a page-turner that whets the appetite for volume 2. A–
