J.K. Simmons and Damien Chazelle to reteam on La La Land

  • Whiplash writer-director Damien Chazelle is rounding out the cast for his upcoming feature La La Land: J.K. Simmons is reteaming with the director for the film, and Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, and Callie Hernandez have all joined the cast of the Los Angeles-set musical. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling will star, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters next July. [The Hollywood Reporter]
  • Dominic Cooper has replaced Henry Cavill on Simon West’s Stratton. The film, an action-thriller about an operative of the Special Boat Service (Cooper), is based on the novels of Duncan Falconer. Cooper joins Tom Felton, Austin Stowell, Tyler Hoechlin, and Gemma Chan in the cast, and filming will begin next week in Italy. [Variety]
  • Zoe Lister-Jones has taken over Cobie Smulders’ role in HBO’s film Confirmation, due to Smulders’ having a broken leg. The film portrays Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court hearings amid the Anita Hill scandal. Kerry Washington will star as Hill, and Dope helmer Rick Famuyiwa will direct. [Deadline]
  • Valorie Currie has joined Ewan McGregor, Dakota Fanning, and Jennifer Connelly on the cast of American Pastoral. McGregor will also make his directorial debut on the film, which is about a man whose life falls apart when his daughter gets involved in the tumultuous politics of the 1960s.   • Liam James, Sarah Steele, and Austin McKenzie have signed on for Speech & Debate, a dark comedy about a trio of misfit teenagers. Stephen Karam is adapting the screenplay from his own play of the same name, and Dan Harris will direct. [Deadline]
