There is a universe where, back in the 1990s, Nicolas Cage played Superman in a film directed by Tim Burton and written by Kevin Smith. The really fascinating thing? That universe was almost ours! Now, a new documentary called The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? details the rise and ultimate collapse of this venture, one of the great what-if’s of the superhero genre.

Written and directed by Jon Schnepp, the doc features interviews with Burton, Smith, producer Jon Peters, screenwriter Dan Gilroy, and costume designer Colleen Atwood, among others. The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and digitally on July 9, the first day of Comic-Con where attendees will be able to discover more about the film at booth #3915.

You can pre-order a copy of the doc at the movie’s official website—and you can see an exclusive clip above.
