We gave it a B+

Just when you thought you’d heard it all, along comes The Tribe. Set in a Ukrainian boarding school rank with misery, the film doesn’t contain a single line of dialogue or any subtitles—because the entire cast is deaf. And we enter their world not as outsiders but as bystanders. Director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy slathers on the realism with explicit scenes of sex and violence, the latter of which are hard to take even before an abortionist appears at the two-thirds mark. But as an amazing piece of pure cinema, The Tribe needs to be experienced. And talked about. B+
