How to make a bunny act 101: Behind the scenes of 'Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter'

Posted on

When it comes to Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, there are two kinds of people: those who saw one of the year’s under-appreciated indie gems, and those who haven’t yet fallen for Bunzo.

The Zellner brothers’ story about a woman’s journey to find the lost riches of Fargo begins in Japan, where her only companion is a bunny named Bunzo. When Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi) decides that her destiny lies somewhere in the snows of Minnesota, she must first release her friend into the wilds of Tokyo. The scene is devastating.

To capture the moment, the Zellners, director and co-writer David and co-writer Nathan, called for some class-A bunny acting from Bunzo. This behind-the-scenes featurette from the film, which is available on digital platforms and VOD starting June 19, shows viewers how the duo scored such a lived-in performance from the furry friend.
